Winter Grind

Brewery:

Mother’s Brewing Company

Aroma:

Big roasted coffee aroma

Appearance:

Dark black with white frothy head. Pours big then settles to a light rim around the glass. Seems to have moderate head retention.

Flavor:

A smooth roasted flavor dominates the first drink. It is hard to distinguish the roasted flavors from the barley and coffee. The beer has a bit of a bitterness to it. An interesting but perfectly balanced combination between the acids from the coffee and hops. The beer has a very tart bite at the end. I think this is a phenomenal beer. I haven’t had a coffee beer that accents the coffee as well as this beer.

Mouthfeel:

Surprisingly light. It is a medium bodied ale that isn’t as big as it looks.

Overall Impression:

I think the cold brewed espresso really shines in this ale. It is a good beer, and highlights the coffee nicely. I feel like it could use a bit more body, but that might take away from the coffee flavor they are trying to highlight.

Aroma:

Huge Cascade Blast of hops give this beer a wonderful nose

Appearance:

Deep brown with nice frothy head. Just shy of black.

Flavor:

The beer starts with the cascade nose. First drink you get a chocolate bitterness from the chocolate malts combined with a large bitter hop presence. The malts leave a toasted flavor on the tongue as the beer warms in your mouth. This is a very unique beer, but I like it. I think it is a good winter ale. It is a bit darker, but has the hop flavor I love. The beer doesn’t finish as expected. It taste thin at the end and doesn’t leave the chocolate notes I expected.

Mouthfeel:

Medium light

Overall Impression:

Great ale for winter and sharing with friends but won’t make the reserve collection. Somehow I don’t think that was the goal anyhow.

Comments:

I love the let it snow competition on their website. When drinking this ale post you pics here and upload them to New Belgium’s site to win glassware.

Dundee Festival Ale

I tried the Dundee Festival Ale tonight at dinner. I never have time to write my thoughts when tasting but this beer found the perfect blend of warm holiday spices and malty flavor. All the spices (nutmeg, all spice, orange peel) were all very subtle, but added a nice well balanced flavor that made the beer very enjoyable. Post some pics or thoughts if you have tried this ale.
