Hoptimum

First tasting at the Foundry in KC above.

2nd tasting at home. Notice the remarkable difference in colour. Some is lighting, but wow.

Brewery:

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

Aroma:

Piney resin aroma, like sap covered pine needles.

My second taste I got a lot more floral notes with sweetness. I don’t know if I was drunk the first time or what.

Appearance:

Colour is picture perfect. Bright amber pours with a nice head that settles to a white rim.

Flavor:

The beer starts with its lovely aroma. First drink you receive a warming malt body (i attribute to alcohol and a perfect malt bill). That soon starts to get slammed with bitterness and cabonation that finishes a perfect drink from start to finish. Throughout the drink you get to enjoy the beautiful aroma.

Mouthfeel:

Dry with some warming alcohol notes. Pleasant but low malt sweetness. Big bodied.

Overall Impression:

I log huge beers. This one is no exception. It is much bigger than I expected, like a double IPA. It seems they wanted to bring a lot of malt forward to balance the huge bitterness, but seems to have a warming big alcohol double IPA effect. Very good beer, almost better for winter time.

Wonderful whole hop beer.

Comments:

The beer was a challenge at the beer camp Sierra Nevada held. I would love to try this with one of Deschutes whole hop offerings.

Branding is weird. To me this could get branded as a winter warmer and I would drink it like crazy in December.

Appearance:

Beatiful, bright crystal clear amber color. Perfect transparency.

Flavor:

Flavor is amazing. The beer starts with a perfect balance between the huge bitterness and pleasant malt body that finishes the fresh hop slam which comes with each drink.

Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied, bitter and well carbonated.

Overall Impression:

Amazing fresh hop beer from a craft beer pioneer.

Celebration Ale

Sierra Nevada’s winter seasonal is a winter take on The I.P.A. They took the malty hop flavored I.P.A. that craft beer lovers enjoy and added a subtle spiciness for the holidays. I enjoy this beer as an afternoon treat or a evening compliment to a lazy night of movies or games. Make sure to try this seasonal ale while it lasts!

Celebration Ale - Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada’s Anniverssary Ale

Another great ale from Sierra Nevada. Their endless hop combination’s always make a great ale.  Slightly lighter and more crisp then a double IPA, this tart Anniversary ale is perfect for a celebration. I am kicking off the Holiday season with a glass. What are you drinking?

alcohol content 5.9% by volume yeast Top-fermenting Ale Yeast
beginning gravity 14.9 Plato bittering hops Chinook
ending gravity 3.5 Plato finishing hops Cascade
bitterness units 46 dry hopping Cascade
malts Two-row Pale, Caramel & Munich

Estate Ale

This Sierra Nevada Ale is a truly original ale. It is one of the handful of beers in the world that is developed entirely on their Estate. This first release is excellent. It has a nice Piney aroma from the hops, but it still has a full flavor from the malts and has a nice balanced taste.

To me it is evident that this beer is no accident. It is a carefully crafted ale that show many years of studying and practicing making great beer.

I don’t think there is a huge market for such beers, but I think it is an extremely interesting idea and the way that beer should be brewed and enjoyed. Here is to a great glass of beer.

Kellerweis

Kellerweis

This Sierra Nevada Hefeweizen is a an unexpected offering from a great brewery. This is a relatively new offering for Sierra Nevada, and the first time I have seen or tasted it. I really love this beer. I am tasting on a cool day towards the end of summer and this wheat beer has a harvest feel with the wheat stalks on the yellow label. It is a light yellow cloudy ale which is full of banana and clove flavors making if taste like it is straight from Belgium. The beer has a nice white foamy head and is full of body that is expected on a wheat beer. This great beer is worth drinking every fall, make sure to pick one up and let me know what you think.

In other news; notice my O-State Alum cup. I am excited about the upcoming football season, but partially disgusted as Oklahoma State was one of seven colleges  the Wall Street Journal noted for requesting Budweiser not to distribute college themed Bud-Light cans in the area. Unfortunately, I don’t think they did it because Bud Light isn’t any good. I suppose it doesn’t really matter I just don’t like the idea. I would love to hear the rationale.
